FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Northern Communities Form First Manitoba Regional Roundtable
Leaf Rapids - October 27, 1999 - Representatives of the
Community Round Tables of Leaf Rapids, Lynn Lake and South
Indian Lake met in a joint session, together with the Mayors
of the communities and representatives from the Federal
Departments of Environment, Health and Agriculture and
Agri-Food and the Province of Manitoba Intergovernmental
Affairs. With the support of the Rural Development Institute
from Brandon University, the formation of Manitoba's first
Regional Round Table was completed. The three individual
communities have been working on blueprints for their futures
and each recognized the need for improved regional
cooperation to address issues of mutual concern.
Funding to assist with the inaugural work of the Regional Round
Table is being provided through Federal/Provincial grants to
the University of Brandon Rural Development Institute and the
communities. The success of the Leaf Rapids/Lynn Lake/South
Indian Lake Regional Round Table process will be determined by:
1. The efficient use of the region's resources.
2. Improved infrastructure and community resources.
3. The level of decision-making within the region.
4. Improved use of government programs and services.
5. How well the Regional Round Table operates as a pro-active
forum for regional development.
At the meeting, the consensus was that the Regional Round Table
would be made up of three to five members of each community
round table. The newly formed Regional Round Table will
establish terms of reference and strategic actions to reach
regional development success.
All in attendance agreed that this action was a positive step
towards a strong voice for a region that has many similarities
and strengths to be built on, providing a stronger region and
people.
The next meeting will be held in Lynn Lake in
late-November/early-December.
